Water Bill Changes Considered for Kirksville

Deposits for new water service customers in Kirksville will be going up, if an ordinance making several changes to the water operations of the city is approved by the council tonight.

Over the past 12 months Finance Director, Katie Myers has been reviewing ways to increase efficiency and the collection percentage in the water department. The changes in the ordinance will streamline the deposit collection process, bring the deposit requirement up to current rates — raising them to $80 — as well as quantifying leak adjustments, and allowing the Finance Director to accept monthly installments for bills known as “catch-up” bills due to four or more estimated reads. The changes also let the city reimburse landlords whose tenants leave without paying water bills, if the city is ultimately able to collect on the bill.
