The Kirksville City Council met last night for their first meeting of the month and started the evening off with a proclamation declaring April as Fair Housing Month in order to assist in the fight against discrimination in our community. The council went on to approve an Ordinance amdending Water Sewer Operations, now leaving it up to property owners and landlords to decide if tenants have to pay the city’s deposit for water and trash pick-up service. The issue was originally brought up by a citizen who asked if the deposit could be waived on their new residence since they were in good financial standing with the city. This new amendment could mean more savings for many Kirksville residents but it is the sole decision of property owners and landlords to waive the city’s deposit. Waiving the deposit would mean the property owner would instead pay the fee to the city.
