A single file line of more than forty local citizens wound its way through the woods at Thousand Hills State Park Thursday evening. At the head of the line, along with a party of local leaders, was Governor Jay Nixon. Governor Nixon spoke briefly before instigating the hike and introduced the event as part of promoting his “100 Miles Challenge” for Missouri. The challenge encourages Missourians to pledge to traverse at least one-hundred miles on trails in Missouri parks. Governor Nixon claimed the challenge was inspired in part by Missouri being proclaimed the outstanding trail state in the Country, and that he hopes it will both inspire healthy fitness habits and encourage people to visit their local parks.
Governor Nixon spoke adamently of the challenge and expressed hopes that this is just the beginning.
