10-13-1MO Takes Action During National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

It’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and Missouri is taking steps to protect the state’s schools against cyber incidents.

In a day and age of security breaches, Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway is taking the initiative to assess the cyber security of school districts and other institutions across the state.  Galloway wants to improve the security of information schools have on students and their families.  The Cyber Aware School Audits process will start in the coming months and will examine five districts across the state.  The Missouri student information system for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is also undergoing an audit. The audits will focus on the effectiveness of existing cybersecurity safeguards, review the school district’s ability to detect a cybersecurity breach and the planned response if there is one, student personal information accessibility and protection, technology use policies, and student and staff privacy and security awareness training. The audits done in a few school districts can provide a blueprint for better protection for all districts across the state.
