elderly theft

A Kirksville woman charged with forgery was sentenced for stealing tens of thousands from her elderly employer.

Amy L. McClanahan, 43, was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections last month on one count of felony forgery. McClanahan, who originally pleaded not guilty, agreed to a plea deal on Sept. 15.

McClanahan was charged in a scheme where authorities say she would write a check for a certain amount, have her employer sign it, then add a digit in front of the original number before depositing it in her bank account.

Adair County Sheriff’s Office investigators said the first check was altered in September 2014 and the tally reached $21,470.

McClanahan was already on probation for a stealing conviction in 2006.
