Former Legal Secretary Arrested for Stealing

A Prosecutor’s former Legal Secretary has been arrested for allegedly stealing money, and for forgery..

31 year old Karie Jo Holman of Novelty was charged in connection with missing funds, which turned up missing during an audit of Knox County. Holman was a secretary in the private law firm of Deveny, Brown and Fortney, in Edina when the thefts occurred. Two lawyers in that firm were serving as Knox County prosecutor and assistant prosecutor at that time. Holman is accused of stealing four blank checks and using a signature stamp to steal nearly $1,000 dollars. She has reportedly admitted to and apologized for the thefts through in a series of texts, emails and in-person conversations with Jo Fortney beginning on August. Because the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office is directly involved in this case, the Knox County Prosecutor has asked to be disqualified from the case. A Special Prosecutor from the Missouri Attorney General’s Office has been assigned to prosecute it. Holman is scheduled to appear for arraignment on October 27.
