Blunt Holds Roundtable on Mental Health

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt was in Kirksville yesterday to talk about mental health.

Local leaders, health care professionals and professors joined the Congressman at Truman State University for a round table discussion about neurodevelopmental health and funding for the National Institutes of Health. Neurodevelopmental conditions vary and include autism, Down syndrome and schizophrenia. The NIH recently recived $32 billion for research on mental disorders. Blunt says the the increase in research funding will be able to help with finding better ways to diagnose mental health disorders. Truman State University is seeking about $20 million in funding to renovate the Greenwood School and create an Inter-Professional Autism Clinic. Currently, individuals in the area with autism have to go to Columbia for services.
