State Judge Rules Against Steele in Firing

A state court ruling against a judge is a victory for a former deputy circuit clerk.

A former Adair County deputy circuit clerk who is suing Second Circuit Presiding Judge Russell Steele for wrongful termination won a crucial ruling from a state court this week. In 2013, Judge Steele terminated Susan Gall’s employment against the wishes of Adair County Circuit Clerk Linda Decker. Gall challenged the court’s jurisdiction over the hiring and firing of circuit clerks. On Tuesday, a Missouri 13th Circuit Judge ruled that Steeleā€™s move to claim appointing authority over deputy clerks from the Adair County Circuit Clerk was not possible under Missouri state law. Now that there has been a ruling by the Missouri court, Gall’s lawsuit can proceed in Federal court. No date has been set yet for the federal case.
