Governor Nixon Gives Final State of the State

In his eighth and final annual address, Governor Nixon gave the State of the State last night.

The Goveror said “education is the key to our future,” and called for more education funding. Under his proposed budget, public universities and community colleges that freeze their undergraduate tuition rates would receive around $55 million more in performance-based funding. Nixon also proposed increasing the foundation formula for K-12 public schools by about $85 million.The governor’s budget also called for additional resources for Medicaid services.Speaker Todd Richardson, who delivered the Republican response to the State of the State, called for Medicaid reform–stating the cost of the program has increased nearly 27 percent while Nixon has been governor.
