Suspect Shoots Self As Officers Approach

A suspect wanted in a string of vehicle break-ins and burglaries shot himself after fleeing officers. On Friday morninng, several Lewis County residents contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report their vehicles had been tampered with and items, including jewelry, credit cards and handguns were taken from them. Through their investigation, Lewis County Deputies determined 20-year-old Austin D. Clark was a suspect in the case. While on the way to Mr. Clark’s residence in LaGrange, deputies sawhim walking on Monroe Street between Fourth and Fifth Street.Clark reportedly took off running as soon as they approached, then produced a handgun and shot himself. Deputies recovered two stolen handguns at the scene, and the Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating. As of Friday, Clark was in serious condition at an area hospital.
