Local School Districts to Decide on Masks in Classrooms

When school starts this fall, Kirksvile R-III will decide on mask policies and class sizes. During a briefing last week at the Capitol, state Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven says the state is not mandating wearing masks or putting a limit on class size. The state realizes that circumstances vary in each school district, and many factor go into these decisions. Vandeven said in the fall, schools will start to encourage employees and students to stay home any time they feel sick. This includes getting rid of incentives for perfect attendance. Attendance will also be waived as an accountability measure for school districts in the coming school year. Vandeven said schools being open are an important part of our economic recovery, and added that most parents and educators want to get back to the classroom in August.
