Authorities have charged the man arrested about an hour after his house caught fire Thursday with setting that fire. 46-year old James Walkup of Novinger was arrested in Kirksville Thursday afternoon while firefighters were still battling the blaze at the home at 902 Oak Street in Novinger. According to a probable cause affidavit, Walkup told police at the time that he’d set the fire to try and commit suicide. He’s charged with second-degree arson and presently being evaluated in an out-of-town mental health facility. His home is a total loss.
