Police say an Edina man had already stolen a vehicle and was trying to steal the gas to drive it out of the area. When officers tried to stop Cody Atkins, he sped off, leading them on a chase that ended south of Kirksville after Atkins crashed and ran into a corn field.
The Highway patrol said yesterday they arrested Atkins on Monday afternoon following the chase, which led from Brashear to Kirksville and then south of Kirksville on Highway 63, where he crashed and fled on foot. Kirksville Police and Adair County Sheriff’s deputies, along with canine and aerial units of the highway patrol joined in the search. Atkins was found with the assistance of a thermal imaging camera. As authorities processed him into jail, they learned he was wanted for a probation violation, so Atkins is now held without bond.
