Lawyers who defend the poor in Missouri want more money.
They’re appointed by the court — known as public defenders — and right now entry level lawyers in the system make $38.500 a year. The head of the public defender’s office says that’s about $5,000 less than new lawyers who work for the state attorney general. And, public defenders in Missouri make less than they do in nearby states. Governor Nixon is proposing a 3% raise for all state workers — some republicans would prefer targeted raises to only some state workers — such as public defenders.
