Smoke testing of Kirksville sewer lines set for next week

As a reminder, smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines in Kirksville will begin next week. These tests will blow harmless smoke into the sewer system to find breaks and other areas where stormwater is entering the sewer system. This is part of the City’s overall sewer system study to find and fix these trouble areas. Stormwater is not meant to enter the sanitary sewer system. When it does, that increases the amount of water getting treated, which puts more stress on the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Residents may see smoke from roof vents, building foundations, catch basins, clean-outs, downspouts, sewer laterals, or manhole covers. The smoke will not enter your home or business if it is properly plumbed, vented, and the water traps contain water.
