A fatal crash in Marion County on Saturday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 79-year-old Clarence Morris of Quincy, Illinois, was driving a Mercury Montego northbound on Marion County Road 139, four miles south of Durham, when he suffered a medical event, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Morris was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Mayor declares National Hospice and Palliative Care Month
Mayor Zac Burden signed a proclamation recognizing November 2023 as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month in Kirksville. For more than 40 years nationally, hospice has provided comfort and dignity to millions of people, allowing them to spend their final months at home surrounded by loved ones. The hospice model involves an interdisciplinary, team-oriented approach to treatment, including expert medical care, quality symptom control, and comprehensive pain management as a foundation of care. Hospice of Northeast Missouri, a service of Hannibal Regional Health Systems, is a non-profit hospice whose sole focus is on quality of life for patients and their caregivers and is rated 5 Stars by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Road work set for Marion County
MoDot says Area travelers will begin to see activity as preparations are in place for preliminary work to begin on a bridge replacement project located on Missouri Route 79, over Bear Creek, Norfolk Southern Railroad and Warren Barrett Drive, 0.4 miles north of Route T in Hannibal in Marion County. Weather permitting, work will begin on November 15, including surveying, clearing and grubbing, the construction of a work pad and foundation inspection holes for the drilled shafts. While preliminary work will have no impacts to traffic, the closure of the Sodalis Nature Trail, within the project limits, will be necessary until the project is completed next Fall. Substantial work on the bridge replacement will begin later this year or early 2024.

Adair County doing transition to new 911 system
The Adair County Emergency Communications Center will be conducting the transition to newly installed Next-Generation 911 phone and radio systems today. This upgrade will lead to improved functionality for emergency communications. During this transition, 911 calls may be temporarily routed to Sullivan County 911, our backup center, for handling. Callers may experience some irregularities when calling the non-emergency numbers to the Adair County Emergency Communications Center during this transition. Please be patient during this time, and be sure to dial 911 if you have any need for urgent law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical assistance. As a reminder, non-emergency numbers to the Adair County Emergency Communications Center include 660.665.5621, 660.665.5622, and 660.665.1260.
State Treasurer in Kirksville today
State Treasurer Vivek Malek will be in Kirksville today, to talk about the MOBUCK$ Loan Program with local leaders. He’ll be at the Adair County Administration Building in Kirksville at 3:15 p.m.
Governor Parson focus of new book
Governor Mike Parson announced that a forthcoming book about his life titled No Turnin’ Back will be released March 2024. The commemorative biography will detail the life of Michael L. Parson, Missouri’s 57th Governor nicknamed “G57.” No Turnin’ Back will focus on the made-in-America story of Michael L. Parson and his journey from meager beginnings in small town Wheatland, Missouri, to the highest political office in the state of Missouri. The 6″x9″ hardcover book will contain over 300 pages of text and photos – all color. Net earnings from the sale of No Turnin’ Back will go to the Moving Missouri Forward Foundation, a nonprofit that supports Jobs for America’s Graduates-Missouri, children with special needs, and other programs focused on children across Missouri.
Technology mini-grants awarded
Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft announced that his office has awarded over $320,000 in additional funding for 28 technology mini-grants distributed to several Missouri libraries. Since January 1, 2023, Ashcroft’s office – through the Missouri State Library – has awarded 146 grants totaling over two million dollars. These grants provide funding to public libraries for technology and automation-related equipment and software to improve network infrastructure and expand services.
