The State Department of Conservation is adding two new hunting seasons for this year. Ky3 says there is an early antler-less season for deer from October 6 to 8th. The other season is a chronic wasting disease season, which runs from November 22 to 26 in several counties around the state.

Truman State has students available for service projects
Are you a part of a local non-profit looking for volunteers for upcoming projects? The Truman State University SERVE Center is a student-led service team dedicated to helping students and organizations connect with local Kirksville non-profits! In its history, the SERVE Center has partnered with more than 130 community agencies located in the Kirksville community and run events such as the BIG Event every year. Whiskey and Turkey Festival coming up
Don’t miss Main Street Kirksville’s Whiskey & Turkey Festival on Saturday, September 9. All of the fun will be located on South Elson Street in Downtown Kirksville. The festival starts at 5:00 pm with music, turkey legs and plenty of drink options. Missouri’s own Travis Gibson takes the stage at 7:00 pm. All the fun keeps going until 10:00 pm. This event is a fun twist on Kirksville history. The legend goes that Jesse Kirk served a meal of turkey and whiskey to the key people who ended up naming the City after him.
Gym Facility in Milan open for students two days a week
Milan C-2 Schools says The Gym Facility will be open for Milan students in grades 6 through 12 who would like to use the facility for activities to better themselves or to play activities with other students. The gym will be open from 6:15 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on September 7th.
Talks about I70 expansion continue
Public meetings are underway across the state to talk about the plan to expand I-70 to six lanes across missouri. Plans call for the project to be done in seven years.

Market on Main Fall Fiesta coming up
The City of Milan reminds, the Market on Main Fall Fiesta is coming up on September 23rd. Chili Cookoff registration starts at 10 a.m. Museum tours run 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Bounce houses start at 10, and chili cookoff judging starts at noon. The pepper eating contest, cornhole tournament, foam party, parade of countries, pageant, and rolling of the balls all happen in the afternoon. The street dance with Grupo 515 is from 9 p.m. until midnight.
New exhibit opens Tuesday
The Kirksville Arts Association says The Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild exhibit opens next Tuesday, September 5th and will run through October 21st. The exhibit features quilts by twenty one area quilters and showcases over sixty quilts in the Ellebracht and Gaber Galleries at the Sue Ross Arts Center. The Sue Ross Arts Center is located at 215 S. Franklin in Kirksville. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 11 am to 4 pm and Saturdays 10 am to 2 pm. We are closed on all major holidays. A reception will be held Thursday, September 28th from 5:30 to 7 pm and is open to the public. There is no cost to visit the exhibit and children are always welcome.
Commission set to talk about scholarship program
The City of Kirksville’s Lakes, Parks, and Recreation Commission will hold a meeting at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in the meeting room at the Kirksville Aquatic Center. The group plans to have a discussion of the proposed Parks and Recreation scholarship program.
Collect your household hazardous waste
The City of Kirksville says Household hazardous waste (HHW) drop-off for City residents will be Saturday, September 16, 2023, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm at the Public Works Complex, located at 2001 N. Osteopathy St. Citizens must call Public Works to schedule an appointment. Citizens will not be allowed to drop off waste without an appointment. Appointments are limited and no additional appointments will be made once the schedule is full. Household Hazardous Waste applies to any leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted. Latex paint is not accepted. You are able to dispose of latex paint in your trash as long as it is in a dry, solid, hardened state. You may use kitty litter or sand to harden it, or simply leave the lid off so it can dry out. A maximum of 10 total gallons of paint will be accepted from each citizen who has a scheduled appointment.
