Summer Safety Day is coming up
The State Emergency Management Agency says the state will observe Summer Safety Day on June 14th. SEMA and the National Weather Service (NWS) encourage all Missourians to pay attention to local forecasts and plan accordingly when activities are outside. Humidity can amplify the feeling of heat measured by a heat index, so it is especially important to keep a close eye on friends and family and know the signs of heat-related illnesses.
Governor signs legislation
Governor Mike Parson yesterday signed Senate Bills 39 and 49 into law. SB 39 prohibits educational institutions from allowing biological male students from participating on sports teams designated for biological females. SB 49 establishes the Missouri Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act. The SAFE Act prohibits health care providers from performing gender transition surgeries or prescribing hormones or drugs for the purposes of gender transition to Missouri children under the age of 18.
Adams Drive road work starts soon
The Street Maintenance Division of the City of Kirksville’s Public Works Department will begin mill and overlay work on South Adams Drive and West Adams Drive, from West Shepherd Avenue to the end of the road, starting Wednesday, June 12, 2023. The street will have alternating lane closures during construction. This project is expected to be completed by June 22, depending on the weather.
Reminder about dogs at baseball and softball games
Kirksville Parks and Rec says Baseball and Softball Season is in full swing. Just a friendly reminder that “All dogs shall be prohibited from playing fields and spectator seating areas during game play except for dogs included under “service animals” as defined by and provided for in the Americans With Disabilities Act and the City of Kirksville Code of Ordinances.
A.T. Still celebrates graduation
A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) celebrated the graduation of 257 students from its online and residential programs at two commencement ceremonies held on Friday, June 2, at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. 133 students graduated from ATSU-ASHS’ online programs and 124 students graduated from ATSU-ASHS’ residential programs.
Truman State taking applications for JBA Jr. program
Truman State University says the Joseph Baldwin Academy, Jr. Program at Truman is currently accepting reservations for this summer’s session taking place July 17-21. It is a one-week day program filled with engaging academic opportunities for students from the northeast Missouri region. Students participate in a variety of academic opportunities led by Truman faculty and staff. Registration is open now through June 15. The summer academy is open to learners who are currently in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade. The standard rate is $100 per student, with lunch included, and the free/reduced lunch rate is $25 per student, with lunch included. You’ll pay one rate or the other, not both.
State executes Michael Tisius
The State of Missouri has executed a man who killed two jailers. 42-year-old Michael Tisius died by lethal injection yesterday evening. He’d been convicted in the murders of Leon Egley and Jason Acton at the Randolph County Jail. His lawyers had asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block the execution, saying a juror at a sentencing hearing couldn’t read, which is in violation of state law. The court rejected that motion, and Governor Mike Parson refused to stop the execution.
Governor denies clemency to man facing execution for two murders
Governor Mike Parson confirmed that the state of Missouri will carry out the execution of a man accused of killing two jailers during a failed jailbreak of a former cellmate. The Governor denied clemency for Michael Tisius, who faces execution today. The Governor said, “It’s despicable that two dedicated public servants were murdered in a failed attempt to help another criminal evade the law. The state of Missouri will carry out Mr. Tisius’s sentences according to the Supreme Court’s order and deliver justice.” Tisius would become the third person in Missouri to be put to death this year.
Lakes, Parks, and Recreation Commission meets today
The City of Kirksville Lakes, Parks, and Recreation Commission meets at noon today. Their agenda shows they will review the Master Plan Phase one progress, and get an update on the Kirksville Aquatic Center.
