COMMISSION TO HELP PREVENT VETERAN SUICIDE
The Missouri Veterans Commission (MVC) has named Lindsey Ward as the Veterans Suicide Prevention Manager. In July, Governor Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 912 and House Bill 1495 into law, charging the Veterans Commission with creating a new program to assist in efforts to prevent Veteran suicide.
Ward will lead the Veterans Suicide Prevention Program and work in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Mental Health to provide recommendations and adopt procedures, programs, treatment options, aid, and other assistance necessary to support efforts to prevent Veteran suicide.
KIRKSVILLE WOMAN FALLS ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL
A crash occurred on Highway 63, two miles north of Atlanta, Missouri, on December 5, 2024, at 8:30 p.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The accident involved a 2008 Kia Optima and a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado traveling northbound. Authorities report that the driver of the Kia, a 61-year-old woman from Kirksville, Missouri, fell asleep at the wheel and collided with the rear of the Silverado.
The Kia Optima sustained total damage and was towed from the scene by Still’s Towing. The Silverado, driven by a 61-year-old man from Kirksville, sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. Both drivers were reported to have been wearing seat belts.
A 54-year-old woman from Kirksville, a passenger in the Silverado, sustained moderate injuries. She was transported by private vehicle to Northeast Regional Medical Center for treatment.
TRUMAN STATE BOWL GAME
The fifth edition of the America’s Crossroads Bowl, sponsored by the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, will be the first rematch in the game’s short history. The Truman State Bulldogs will face the Tiffin (Ohio) Dragons in a sequel to the 2022 encounter at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Hobart, Indiana.
The Bulldogs have won six of their last seven games after starting the season 0-3. In their last three outings, the team has outscored their opponents 141-10. Truman State earned its bowl bid with a second-place finish in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and broke the tie-breaker with Upper Iowa by virtue of its win over the Peacocks 26-23 on the road on October 5th.
BULLDOGS IN BOWL GAME
Hobart will host athletes, families and fans for the NCAA Division II America’s Crossroads Bowl Dec. 7.
The game is one of two NCAA Division II bowl games sponsored nationally in 2024. It is conducted in partnership with the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority and the City of Hobart.

POTENTIAL POWER OUTAGES
The City of Kirksville wants to inform residents of potential power outages on the east side of the city. There was a structure fire in the area of East Harrison and North Bradford streets that damaged power lines. Once the Kirksville Fire Department has completed its work, Ameren will begin work to restore power.
TWO MEN INJURED IN CRASH
Two men were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:48 a.m. on December 3, 2024, on Highway 63 at Hungry Hollow Road, four miles north of Kirksville, Missouri, according to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The crash involved a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and a 2018 Peterbilt garbage truck. The Subaru Crosstrek, driven by a 26-year-old man from St. Peters, Missouri, sustained total damage and was towed from the scene by Kirksville Autoworks. The driver was wearing a seat belt and suffered moderate injuries. He was transported by Adair County Ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center.
The Peterbilt garbage truck, driven by a 47-year-old man from Moberly, Missouri, sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. The driver, who was also wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Adair County Ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center.
Governor requests disaster declaration
Governor Mike Parson requested that President Joe Biden approve a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance in 14 counties in response to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred November 3 – 9, 2024, resulting in significant damage to public infrastructure. Joint damage assessments conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), SEMA, and local emergency managers estimate nearly $45 million in infrastructure damage and emergency response costs eligible for federal assistance. If approved, Public Assistance would allow local governments and qualifying nonprofit agencies to seek federal assistance for reimbursement of emergency response and recovery costs, including repair and replacement of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure.
Police warn about Saturday street closures
The City of Kirksville wants to inform residents of several street closures for Saturday’s Hometown Holiday.
On Saturday, there will be no parking from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm on the parade route – Franklin Street, from Missouri Street to Washington Street; Washington Street, from Franklin Street to Elson Street; and Elson Street, from Washington Street to Missouri Street. Be advised that Franklin Street, from Missouri Street to Buchanan Street and the intersection with Illinois Street, will be closed for the parade lineup starting at 4:30 pm.
Additionally, four parking spots near Dover Park will have no parking from 5:00 pm on Friday to 8:00 pm on Saturday.
Please pay attention to signage and Kirksville Police Department personnel leading up to and during the event. We also ask parade spectators to remain out of the street while the parade is going on.

Governor Mike Parson and First Lady Teresa Parson cordially invite families to attend this year’s Candlelight Tours and annual tree lighting ceremony at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion on Friday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. The annual lighting of the tree will be followed by this year’s Candlelight Tours. The Candlelight Tours will run until 8:00 p.m. The tree that will be displayed on the Mansion lawn is a 40-ft Norway Spruce donated by the family of Daryl and Sherry Richardson of Boone County. In addition to the Governor’s Mansion, this year, the Governor’s Gardens and the Maus House will also be decorated. The Governor’s Gardens will feature a 30-ft Christmas tree, and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be hosted at the Maus House from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. on December 11th, 13th, 17th, and 19th. Families are encouraged to bring their children to meet Santa Claus. This year’s theme is “A Christmas Hug: The Farewell to the Parson Family.” During the Candlelight Tours, visitors will be able to walk through the festively decorated ground floor of the Governor’s Mansion.
