GOVERNOR SIGNS ORDER FOR DISASTER RELIEF

State relief may be coming soon to parts of Missouri that have been affected by recent severe weather.

Governor Mike Parson signed an executive order late last week to give relief to counties north of Kansas City and northwest of St. Louis. Those include Ray County, where an EF-0 tornado damaged homes Friday evening. Large areas of damage were also reported in Knox County, were an EF-2 tornado hit, also on Friday night.

SCHOLARSHIP BEING OFFERED

According to moberlymonitor.com, applications for The Charles L. and Virginia S. Rothwell Continuing Education Scholarship are due August 31 for the fall semester.

Applicants must be a resident of the Westran or Higbee School districts. This scholarship is for continuing education and may be used for undergraduate or graduate classes.
A student must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. to apply. Applications are available at the Huntsville branch of Central Bank.

TRANSPORTATION MEETING

According to the Moberly Monitor, the Missouri Department of Transportation is inviting the public to join the discussion on priority unfunded transportation needs in their areas.

The public is invited to review the list and provide feedback on the order of priorities that could be funded in the future. A meeting to discuss the draft updated High Priority Unfunded Needs list for transportation in Northeast Missouri will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Missouri Department of Transportation, located at 1711 S. Highway 61, in Hannibal.

MISSOURI HIGHWAY PATROL

A message from the Missouri Highway Patrol.

August has arrived and with it the 2023-2024 school year. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to encourage parents to include conversations about safety when preparing their student for school. It’s also important that drivers be prepared for the change in traffic patterns as students begin another year of instruction. In 2022, two people were killed and 361 injured in traffic crashes involving a school bus. In Missouri last year, a total of 884 traffic crashes involved school buses.

TORNADO IN BARING

According to the Edina Sentinel. fourteen people were rescued from damaged and destroyed homes in Baring overnight.

Emergency personnel including law enforcement, volunteer firefighter fighters, and ambulance personnel were called to Baring at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, August 4, for a reported tornado.

PLANTING TREE PROGRAM

The City of Kirksville is offering a new program to help residents plant trees in the right-of-way adjacent to their property. This program reduces costs for residents, beautifies Kirksville and boosts property values.

Residents can apply for a new tree by completing the Residential Street Tree Program application and paying the $100 program cost share fee.

FELONY HARRASSMENT

A 41-year-old Moberly man has been charged with felony harassment stemming from a July 27 inciden.

According to the Moberly Police Department, Jarae Jadon Hayes is accused of harassing a 27-year-old Moberly female who was walking in the 500 block of 5th Street around 9 a.m. The victim told police she was walking home with her children from a park near the downtown area. The male, later identified as Hayes, approached her on foot and began following her.

When the woman arrived home, she called her boyfriend to come home from work. The boyfriend located Hayes and called police. Hayes was taken into custody.

Hayes is being held in the Randolph County Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond.

Community Block Party is Sunday

Kirksville Parks and Rec says Join us for our last Free Community Block Party of the Summer at Brashear Park from 3-5pm on Sunday August 6, 2023. They’ll have Hot Dogs, Lemonade, Cotton Candy, Snow Cones, Water Fights, a Suds Machine, Fire Truck, and Police Car.

Festival coming up September 16th

The 48th Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival will be Saturday, September 16th from 9 am to 4 pm in downtown Kirksville. A number of new exhibitors will be participating this year.
