Municipal election coming up

The City of Kirksville reminds, the 2024 Municipal Election is steadily approaching on April 2. While that is still several months away, March 6 is the last day to register to vote in that election. Make sure you are registered and can participate in that election.

Missing man found alive

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office says a missing Macon-area man who had been missing was found alive. He was found lying in a wooded area about a half mile west of his home. The Sheriff’s Office had issued an Endangered Silver Advisory for the 72-year-old man on Monday evening. Authorities said he is deaf and suffers from dementia.

New year means new minimum wage

The new year means new laws take effect in Missouri. The minimum wage for all private and non-exempt businesses goes from $12 an hour to $12.30 an hour. Employers are required to pay tipped employees at least 50 percent of the minimum wage, $6.15 per hour, plus any amount necessary to bring the employee’s total compensation to a minimum of $12.30 per hour.

One hurt in wreck

Moderate injuries were reported in a single-vehicle crash in Knox County on New Year’s Eve. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 65-year-old La-Nay Ao Pazan C Clay of LaBelle was driving a 2003 Dodge Durango on Missouri 6, three miles west of LaBelle, when he lost control of the vehicle, overcorrected, and the vehicle went off the right side of the road and overturned. he was taken to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

MO minimum wage to increase

The Missouri minimum wage is set to increase on January 1st. It’ll go up from $12 an hour to $12.30 an hour. The raise means employees will earn an additional $12 weekly if they work 40 hours. The minimum wage increase will be the eighth increase in Missouri since 2015. Since that year, the minimum wage has increased by $4.65 an hour.

Governor and First Lady bringing back Military Ball

Governor Mike Parson and First Lady Teresa Parson announced that they will revive a lost Missouri tradition and host a Missouri Military Ball at the Governor’s Mansion on Saturday, December 30 at 5:30 p.m. The history of Missouri’s leaders hosting Military Balls dates back to the early 1800s with a territorial celebration of the state militia, the predecessor to the Missouri National Guard. With the construction of the current Governor’s Mansion in 1871, the event became the New Year’s Military Reception and continued until 1926. In following years, the military gathering was held intermittently at the Governor’s Mansion, and Governor and First Lady Parson are excited to rekindle this tradition. The 135th Army Band will be performing for the ball and several distinguished guests will be in attendance, including statewide officials, members of the Missouri National Guard, Missouri Military Installation Commanders, military community partners and stakeholders, members of the Missouri General Assembly and Missouri’s congressional delegation, members of the Missouri Military Preparedness and Enhancement Commission, and the Governor’s Cabinet, among other honored guests.

Crash involves two vehicles

Two vehicles were involved in a crash at noon yesterday in Knox County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the driver of a Silverado crossed the center line and hit a Dodge Ram. The driver of the Ram, David Poston, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Scotland County Hospital.

Wrangler hits a bridge

One person was hurt in a crash that happened on a snow-covered bridge yesterday morning. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 41-year-old Justin Perry of Albany, Missouri, was driving a Jeep Wrangler northbound on Route A at NE Glenwood Road, two miles north of Maysville, when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail. The Wrangler went off the side of the road and hit a bridge, and overturned. Perry suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Two hurt in crash near Purdin

Moderate injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Linn County yesterday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it happened on Fair Drive, a mile north of Purdin, at 1:20 p.m. 60-year-old Jerry Mullany of Purdin was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and collided with a Polaris Ranger UTV at the crest of a hill. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Hedrick Medical Center. The UTV was being driven by a 13-year-old male, who suffered minor injuries and was taken to Missouri Children’s Hospital. Neither was wearing a safety device.

Join the Kirksville Parks and Recreation Department on Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and take part in the Kids Cardboard Boat Race!
Children ages 5 to 16 can sign up as an individual or as a team of up to four people and put their building skills to the test. Participants must construct a boat structure using cardboard, duct tape and water-based paint, and attempt to make it across the pool in the fastest time. Teams will compete in age divisions based on the mean age of the team and can win in multiple categories, including Fastest Time and Best Design!
