Voters Speak On Taxing Pot and Local Political Offices

Put a tax on marijuana. Voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved a 3% tax on pot sales in both the city of kirksville and in Adair county. A 3% tax on weed in both.

Other election results: two incumbents re-elected to the Kirksville city council. Jennifer Walston and Rick Steele.
The winners in the school board race — incumbents Nan Davis and Jeremy Houser — also elected to the board, Amy Clendennon.

Other races of interest: On the Novenger R-1 school board Chante McKim, Troy Smith, and Aaron Chapman won.

The Brashear R-2 school board, the winners are Michael Robeson, Monte Fisher, and Sarah Erwin. And Brashear School Prop-2 also passed easily.

Parking Lot Accident Sends Woman To Hospital

In Kahoka, an 81 year old woman who was backing out of a parking space, hit a 74 year old woman who was walking by. The elderly driver also hit another car. The injured pedestrian — Rosalie Smith of Kahoka — was flown to Blessing Hospital with moderate injuries. The driver who caused it, Virginia Webster, had minor injuries.

Truman Students Fan Out To Help The Community

A whole lot of good deeds happened on Saturday in Kirksville — as Truman State Students had their annual day of giving back to the community. They painted houses and cleaned yards for residents who needed help. More than a hundred students took part in the event.

Drug Overdose Leads To Murder Charge

A Randolph County man charged with murder. The weapon: drugs. Kyle Hummel accused of providing the drugs that caused a man to overdose on Sunday. Hummel is charged with second-degree murder and drug distribution and he was locked-up on $100,000 cash-only bond.

Pot Shops Open As Tax Vote Approaches

Grand opening of a pot shop in Cairo. It’s called Blunts and More. Employees will earn $19 to $30 dollars an hour. And tax revenue for the city.

Next Tuesday voters in Kirksville and Adair county will decide whether to approve a pot-tax on marijuana shops locally.

School board and city council seats also up for grabs.

Accused Park Pervert Arrested

In Macon county, deputies arrested 21 year old Logan Fainter of Bevier. Several women said that Fainter asked them to perform a sex act. A park employee spotted Fainter, and the employee was hit by Fainter’s vehicle as he drove off. Deputies later found him, and he’s locked up on $50,000 cash-only bond.

Patrol Blames Week-end Wreck On Drunk Driver

Head-on wreck on Saturday at lunch time on Missouri route six. The patrol say 38 year old Janvier Peterson of Milan was driving drunk, when he passed a line of cars in his pick-up and hit an SUV head-on.

The driver of the SUV seriously hurt. He’s identified as 54 year old Timothy Harrelson of Milan.

Another pick-up ran off the road to avoid the crash.

Peterson, the driver accused of causing the wreck, apparently not hurt, but he was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Adair Health To Handout Overdose Antidote

Starting Monday. the Adair county health department will provide doses of Naloxone to residents who ask. The drug will come in nasal doses — it is used to reverse the affects of opoid overdoses. The health department is seen has a move to help save lives.

In Missouri, there were 1,609 opioid overdose deaths in 2021.

Kirksville Brush & Limb Collection Set

Spring is here. Time for cleaning up your lawn. The City of Kirksville’s Spring Brush and Limb Pick-Up is now set. It runs April 3rd through 7th. City crews will begin picking up tree limbs and large brush on Monday the 3rd. Even though the work is expected to take the entire week, to guarantee pick-up, your brush must be placed curbside by 7:00 am, on that Monday.
